More new music for quarantined souls…The second installment in Tim Sweeney’s Beats In Space label mix series comes from London luminary Josey Rebelle. Drawing from a kaleidoscope of deeply felt and understood sounds, Josey’s twenty-track mix “Josey In Space” maps her personal history onto a communal dance floor and pieces together those shared and sacred musical moments as an exultant whole. The 12” lifts four essential tracks from the story for DJ-ready use: brand new works from Fotomachine and Shy One, and stone cold classics from Access 58 and Rogue Unit. Our first taste off “Josey In Space” comes from London’s Fotomachine with a spectral techno transporter “BBOY”. Blast it above.

“Josey In Space” arrives on May 15th on 12″, cd, and digital formats. Pre-order it here.

Pierre Rousseau, better known as one half of Parisian duo Paradis, lands on Tim Sweeney’s Beats In Space label with his debut solo offering, a six-track EP entitlted “Musique Sans Paroles”. Breezing between earnest orchestration and radiant dance tracks, “Musique Sans Paroles” represents a return to Rousseau’s creative fountainhead; the influences, the instruments, and the city at the doorway of the artist’s origin story reopened.

The EP includes contributions from additional people and places: the opening title track features a short vocal recording by Mana Haraguchi introducing the record, and field recordings from the streets of Paris and Tokyo. “Pastorale” features a drone improvised by sound engineer Kazuyuki ‘Zak’ Matsumura on his EMS Synthi at his Studio St-Robo. “Musique Sans Paroles” marks the first of three releases on the way from Rousseau in 2020.

Director Joseph Bird collaborated with Rousseau on six “photographs with a pulse,” a series of visual stills with subtle emotional motives, for each of the songs on Musique. Watch the video for the superb track “Paris”, the first extract from “Musique Sans Paroles”, above.

The “Musique Sans Paroles” EP will drop on March 27th via Beats In Space Records.

Melbourne’s producer Andras will finally drop his first full length solo album, entitled “Joyful”, on January 31 via Tim Sweeney’s Beats In Space Records. According to the label, the seven-track record is “a cornucopic vision rooted in the decay of dance music from one of Australia’s most distinct yet understated musical voices. Cutting a path through an overgrowth of nostalgia around 70s acid folk and 90s acid house, Joyful is an invitation to till an old garden under a glistening new light”.

Dedicated to Australia’s plentiful population of nectar feeding birds, “Honeybird,” the first offering from “Joyful”, spins a ring-shaped melody through space. Webbed with angelic pads and warm piano notes and uplifted by ricocheting percussion, the repeated punctuation of its namesake becomes a subtle mantra. Words: Elice

Tokyo-based producer and DJ Moko Shibata, aka Powder, has just shared a fantastic, imaginative video for “New Tribe”, taken from her forthcoming EP “Powder In Space” on Tim Sweeney’s Beats In Space, along with a mix of the same title. It marks the first in a new series exploring dance music’s form and informality from Beats In Space Records. For the video, Powder worked with AC-bu, the animation studio of Tooru Adachi and Shunsuke Itakura, to create a biographical video of her evolution from 9 am-to-5 pm desk worker in Tokyo to 9 pm-to-5 am acclaimed DJ around the world. She has managed to balance an ordinary day job with her creative pursuit. Her sacred, nocturnal recording sessions invited Moko to reflect on music’s unique ability to “stop the clock” and “expand or shrink our sense of time.”

In “Powder In Space” EP, Powder presents two new songs that were created within a new schedule, with summers spent touring Europe and North America, welcoming the unique experiences offered by each location. “New Tribe” is one of her most celebratory offerings yet. The track is simply enchanting as is Powder’s music. Her trademarks are here: marching-band snares, breathy riffs, motivating chords, springy auxiliary percussion and bouncy rich melodies. A track that’s guaranteed to get bodies moving. “Gift”, on the other hand, is a subtler dreamy jam, shuffling and twinkling in perfect balance.

On the EP, these new originals sit alongside Daphne’s “When You Love Someone (Groove Instrumental),” a sultry, twirling vibraphone deep house number from 1993; and the first ever release of Samo DJ and Hidden Operator’s atmospheric scene setter, “Захват Сзади Rox.”. For the CD and digital mix release, these four originals weave within an impeccable mix of memories from Moko’s travels and experiences over the past years touring and sharing with new friends.

“Powder In Space” will be available on February 15, 2019 in mix CD and mixed / unmixed digital forms. Powder’s two original tracks, alongside Samo DJ and Daphne’s contributions to her mix, will be available in DJ-ready forms on 12″ vinyl. Pre-order it here.

TRACKLIST:

01. Perel – Pastarella Al Limoncello (Cooper Saver Remix)

What a better way to open La.Ga.Sta.’s compilation Vol. 8 than with an exclusive great remix of Berlin’s Perel track “Pastarella Al Limoncello” from Los Angeles-based DJ/producer Cooper Saver. Once again, Cooper Saver delivers the goods, a finely craftyed remix that’s perfect for your next car rides. You can download this remix for free, courtesy of DFA.

02. Joutro Mundo – Novela

Italo disco grooves from Rio de Janeiro with love! Brazilian DJ/producer and edit specialist Jonas Rocha, aka Joutro Mundo, a major force in the underground scene of Rio de Janeiro, delivers some serious heat on the dancefloor with this exclusive edit of the Italo disco classic “Fotonovela”. And it’s a great one.

03. Jackie House – Breaking Dawn Rays

A fixture on the San Francisco dance music scene for the past decade, Jackie House is the alter-ego of Jacob Sperber, one of the founding members of Honey Soundsystem. Jackie House was kind enough to contribute to our new compilation Vol. 8 his killer epic edit of Don Ray’s 1978 classic track “Got To Have Loving” that clocks in at 10-minutes. It’s great disco ride from start to finish! Absolute fire.

04. Keita Sano – A Place Called Sun Beach

Prolific Japanese producer Keita Sano takes us for a ride with his great track “A Place Called Sun Beach”, a 10-minute dancefloor heater, taken from his recent “Kubo” EP. It’s now yours for free, courtesy of NYC’s Let’s Play House.

05. Palmbomen II – Pure Tibet

LA-based Dutch artist Palmbomen II, otherwise known as Kai Hugo, has contributed to our compilation his sublime track “Pure Tibet”, one of our favorite cuts off his “Memories Of Cindy” EP series, an intimate collection of eulogic, supernatural house music made for a muse and to bemuse those who make (first) contact, on Tim Sweeney’s Beats in Space label.

6. Carrot Green & Selvagem – Bronski In Rio

Brazilian duo Selvagem have joined forces with his comrade Carrot Green, delivering this disco-house heater, which pays homage to one of the greatest hits ever made in the UK. The edit Bronski In Rio” is now available for free, courtesy of NYC’s MM Discos.

07. Balako – Secret World

Blending a vast array of styles from house to salsa, carimbo and 70’s disco and funk, Brazilian duo Balako (an 80’s slang word meaning ‘a good type of mess’) have already wowed us with their superb tracks and EPs on Greco-Roman. For our compilation Vol. 8, Balako deliver an exclusive rework for one of our favorite tracks from Tears For Fears. What’s not to love?

08. Timothy J Fairplay – Night Ferry (Antenna Remix)

Antenna, the Rotterdam-based house project of Sasha Renkas and Eline Makker, offer a deep retake of Timothy J Fairplay’s track “Night Ferry”, taken from his “Revenge Fantasy” EP on Emotional Response. It’s a perfectly crafted remix of optimistic keys and mellow grooves.

09. Felipe Gordon – Acid Party At Teusaquillo (Seb Wildblood Remix)

London producer and Church label head Seb Wildblood continues to turn out quality tracks and this one’s no exception. This time ’round, he works his magic on Felipe Gordon’s track “Acid Party At Teusaquillo” and the result is somethig special. Great vibes all round! The remix is lifted from Felipe Gordon’s “Teusaquillo” EP on Berlin’s Toy Tonics.

10. Jac The Disco – Breathe (Man Power Remix)

With his Me Me Me label now making noise all over the scene and his rep as a DJ and producer who can command venues like Panorama Bar and Fabric firmly established, multi-talented Geoff Kirkwood, aka Man Power, is another producer you just can’t pin down genre-wise. Here he’s taking “Breathe” by Jay Rossi, aka East London DJ stalwart Jac The Disco for a tougher make-over, giving the whole track a more driving, darker feel. Taken from the “Inversions” EP on Roam Recordings.

11. Earth Boys – Put Me On (Earth Boys Remix)

Having already impressed with their quality releases on lables such as Vancouver’s finest 1080p, 2MR, Lets Play House, Earth Boys, the NYC duo of Julian Duron and Michael Sherburn, have provided their own exclusive remix for “Put Me On”, a finely crafted rework in their own signature style, just in time before their new LP drops on Public Release.

12. Harrison BDP – Standing In The Rain

Cardiff-based producer Harry Webber, better known as Harrison BDP, who has been making some serious waves right now, continues his fine run of form with his sublime new track called “Standing In The Rain”, a nearly nine-minute-long deep house affair. It’s yet another example of Harrison BDP doing what he does best.

13. E Ruscha V (Secret Circuit) – Who Are You

LA-based musician Eddie Ruscha, aka Secret Circuit, recently dropped his superb first album “Who Are You” on Tim Sweeney’s label Beats In Space Records under his given name E Ruscha V. Our favorire cut off his abum is “Who Are You”, a beaty of a tune, that has been on repeat on our car stereo all summer. Prepare yourself for a blissful ride.

Following the blissful single “Gateway”, Atlanta-based artist Shy Layers has shared a new track “No Road”, along with a self-directed video by project front-man JD Walsh, taken from his forthcoming sophomore LP “Midnight Marker” on Beats In Space. In his video for “No Road”, Shy Layers crafts a collaged environment of whimsy and wonder. “I was inspired by experimental animation from all eras – Harry Smith, Robert Breer, Suzan Pitt, just to name a few. There are some elements in the video that have shown up previously in my work: the animated outlines of TV weather reporters are decoupled from their original contexts, creating repeating gestures,” says JD Walsh. LA-based artist Eddie Ruscha recently dropped his superb first album “Who Are You” on Tim Sweeney’s label Beats In Space Records under his given name E Ruscha V. The album marks his second release for the label after 2013’s “Tactile Galactics” under the Secret Circuit moniker. Ruscha describes the nine-track record “Who Are You” as spanning states “from calm to ecstatic but mostly in-between these.” This description points toward the liminal atmospherics of the music, which dispose of the many hallmark genre traces that informed Secret Circuit’s galactic journeying. For “Who Are You”, Ruscha was content to wander more intimate environments, in search of an uncharted music rippling with humble discovery. Watch the video for “Carried Away” above, and check out the album’s great title track below.

Palmbomen II: “Memories Of Cindy Pt. 3” Video

Kai Hugo, the artist behind Palmbomen II, has shared the third video in the “Memories of Cindy” series on Beats In Space. Cindy is the eulogized muse behind Palmbomen II’s newest collection of limitless dance music. Released throughout 2017 as a four part 12” EP series, Cindy appeared on the Memories of Cindy Pt. 1 – 4 artwork, and anecdotally in a cable access talk show featuring Kai Hugo and his imagination on display via surreal visuals, late night infomercials, and a cerebral house music score.

Kai Hugo’s visual practice provides a separate view of the Palmbomen II venture: a surreal, neo-noir(ish) California dislocated by the no-frills aesthetic of its music, and the tragicomedy of its imagined characters. “I started making the Memories of Cindy video series as a research project on some of the places and characters from my previous videos. I wanted to figure out what the town called Carmel Vista looked like—where Cindy Savalas and the other characters live,” says Hugo.

Palmbomen II’s “Memories of Cindy” arrives on January 26 via Beats In Space.
