Jonny Nash & Suzanne Kraft: “The Pearl”

Amsterdam-based producers and frequent collaborators Jonny Nash and Diego Herrera, aka Suzanne Kraft, have joined forces once again to deliver their second collaborative album, “A Heart So White”, which follows their 2017 debut LP “Passive Aggressive”. According to the label, the album represents a continuation of the working philosophy adopted during the recording of their debut; immersion in an unfamiliar recording environment with a limited set of tools and the goal of exploring the possibilities that lie within these limitations.

The nine-track record was written and recorded in the Willem Twee Concertzaal, a converted synagogue in Den Bosch, Holland. Whilst “Passive Agressive” explored virtual instruments and environments, “A Heart So White” shifts the focus to acoustic instrumentation, breath, air and physical space. Using the hall’s mechanical drawer organ and Steinway piano, the pair craft a delicately balanced suite of compositions, stripping things back to reveal the bare essence of their shared musical language. Get you fill of the record’s opener “The Pearl”.

Jonny Nash & Suzanne Kraft’s “A Heart So White” arrives on May 15th via Nash’s Melody As Truth label. Pre-order it here.

The next release on the ever-excellent Public Possession is the perhaps most extensive project of the Munich-based label so far. It’s a triple 12″ gatefold LP, entitled “Flower Protocol”, full of Chinese folk songs by Taiwanese artist Yutie Lee. This is the first project that puts emphasis on her acoustic output.

On “Flower Protocol”, Yutie Lee reinterprets six Chinese folk songs about Flowers. “Tuberosa”, “Rose”, “Jasmine”, “Plum Blossom”, “Orchids” and “Chamomile” all are odes to the beauty of the plant, telling a story of something pure and indestructible. By artificially mutating her voice, Yutie Lee successfully manages to transfer the songs into 2020s arguably much more complex, dystopian reality. She does this not without a bow to the past, prevailing something of the original songs sweet essence, even adding a layer of humour… in the end leaving the listener with a feeling of good hope.

To complete the package Yutie Lee’s versions have been remixed by a quite illustrious cast of remixers: Alva Noto, Bell Towers, Laura Groves, Oceanic and Suzanne Kraft all deliver their personal reinterpretation of the originals. Today we’re excited to premiere an ace remix of Yutie Lee’s “Flower Protocol” by Netherlands-based LA producer Diego Herrera under his Suzanne Kraft alias. On “Flower Protocol”, Suzanne Kraft delivers a five-plus minute remix of stuttering vocal chops, soaring synth lines and delicately house-beats that showcases the producer’s ability to craft quality tracks. Blast it above, exclusively on LAGASTA.

“Flower Protocol” will arrive in triple-vinyl and digital formats on April 10th via Public Possession. Pre-order it here or here.

AKSK, a collaboration between Los Angeles-based house producer Diego Herrera, aka Suzanne Kraft, and Romanian vocalist Adda Kaleh, have shared their great track “Breaking” that has been floating around the web for a while now. Perfectly suited for melancholy mornings and late night rides around the city, “Breaking” is one of the standout cuts off the new “Musik For Autobahns 2” compilation of “ambient race car music”, compiled by Running Back head honcho Gerd Janson. Give it a spin or two above.

The “Musik For Autobahns 2” compilation, which was heavily influenced by many trips on the Autobahn between Frankfurt and Heidelberg, is out today via Rush Hour. It also features tracks by Leon Vynehall, Joy Orbison, Fort Romeau, Bicep, and more. Get it here.

Los Angeles-based producer Diego Herrera, aka Suzanne Kraft, who also operates under his new alias Dude Energy, continues his fine run of form by dropping an excellent new album called “Talk From Home” for Jonny Nash’s Melody As Truth label. The seven-track record, which follows last year’s “Missum” mini-album on Running Back, was recorded over a few weeks in the winter of 2014, and showcases his emotional depth as a producer, and skill as a multi-instrumentalist.

Taking a step away from his usual disco-tinged house territory, Suzanne Kraft delivers a collection of quality tunes filled with dreamy synths, yearning guitars, Balearic grooves, and blissed-out vibes. One of our favorite cuts from that record is the guitar-driven “Flatiron”, a laid-back affair that sounds perfect for daydreaming in the sun. Give it a spin above.

Suzanne Kraft’s “Talk From Home” LP is out now via Melody As Truth. Buy it here.
