Crooked Man: “Walls”

Sheffield maverick Richard Barratt, aka Crooked Man, returns to DFA with his new album “Crooked House”, a maximalist take on electronic and house music that picks up where 2016’s self-titled LP left off. Teaming up again with Michael Somerset Ward (Clock DVA) and David Lewin (Bleep & Booster) in the studio, Richard Barratt crafts a comprehensive journey of hi-fi house belters with more sinister electro-pop mixed in for good measure.

The nine-track LP is influenced by two historic epicenters of electronic music: Sheffield, UK, where Richard has had an illustrious career in a mix of legendary groups like Funky Worm, Sweet Exorcist, and The All Seeing I; and the NYC Loft-era disco sound, where extended grooves were layered with peak-time choruses.

Now, Crooked Man has shared “Walls,” the second single off his “Crooked House” LP, a piano-driven house anthem. Speaking about the track, Crooked Man says: “‘Walls’ is about an unhealthy relationship, either with a person or a product. Trying to build up mental fortitude, only to crumble when faced by a test.” The single “Walls” features the powerful vocals of Amy Douglas, who also sang on the 2016 Crooked Man great track “Happiness.

The album “Crooked House” arrives on October 26 on DFA. Pre-order it here.

NYC singer Amy Douglas makes her official DFA debut with “Never Saw It Coming,” a limited release 12” single co-written and produced by Tim Wagner of 33Hz, with two remixes by Sheffield artist Crooked Man.

Though this is Douglas’ first release on the label, she is no stranger to the DFA roster. She is the voice behind “Happiness”, the epic closing track on Crooked Man’s self-titled 2016 LP, and also appears on the forthcoming Crooked Man album, due out on DFA this fall. Amy also works with Juan Maclean as one half of Peach Melba, who have released singles on both DFA and Defected / Classic.

Here, we have for you Crooked Man’s great remix of “Never Saw It Coming” that clocks in at nearly 10 minutes. On his remix, Crooked Man let the track grow and build slowly with longer, lush arrangements. Give it a spin above, and enjoy the ride!

The “Never Saw It Coming” EP arrives on September 21 on DFA. Pre-order the 12″ here.

Sheffield maverick Richard Barratt, formerly DJ Parrot, one half of the “Bleep Techno” duo Sweet Exorcist and part of the dance act All Seeing I, is a man of many talents and aliases. Last year, he dropped his self-titled debut LP for DFA Records under his Crooked Man moniker. A great album that truly showcased his incredible blend of wonky electronic rhythms, heavy bass and razor sharp, politically aware lyrics. One of the record’s standout cuts was the epic closer “Happiness”, a piano-led house banger with soulfully seductive diva vocals. The rich and powerful vocals for “Happiness” were sung by Amy Douglas, who’s also the singer in Juan Maclean’s side-project Peach Melba.

Now, Crooked Man’s instant-classic “Happiness” gets a new EP with three alternate versions of the track. The record also includes a killer “12 Inch version” of “Happiness” that clocks in at eleven minutes. You can stream stream it exclusively on La.Ga.Sa. “‘Happiness’ is about nostalgia, specifically the yearning, happy/sad feeling of hearing an old record that you love”, says Richard Barratt.

Crooked Man’s “Happiness” EP drops on June 23 on DFA. Pre-order it here.
