Retiree: “Magic Eye” (feat. Sui Zhen) Video

Australian group Retiree, the musical project of Matt Crowley, Tori Holleman and Marco Vella, are getting ready to drop their debut album, entitled “House Or Home”, on September 21 via Rhythm Section INTL. Before it drops, we’re treated to the record’s new single “Magic Eye”, a love song ballad featuring dreamy vocals from Melbourne artist Sui Zhen. In their own words: “It was really nice teaming up with Becky (Sui Zhen) to finish this one. We started writing the song before a break up and finished it after it ended. It’s a strange time to write a song. I feel like from the start, the tone of the song was kind of indicative of the situation.”

The album’s songs explore the theme of “house or home” and what that means in present day Australia for different people. They journey from an aboriginal tent embassy on the south coast of New South Wales, a retirement village, a one room flat in Ringwood and a sleepless 17 hour stop over in Malaysia. Pre-order the album here.

Sydney’s Retiree, consisting of Matt Crowley, Tori Holleman and Marco Vella, have returned to Plastic World with their new single “Jan” after last year’s great first single for the label “Continental”. Filled with the band’s signature dreamy vocals and 80’s like drum beats, “Jan” sees Retiree delve further “into a sonic exploration of electronic-pop music.” In their own words: “Jan is a melancholy song in disguise. I started writing it on a train from Germany to Amsterdam on my way to my uncles funeral. The whole song is sort of equal parts reflective, sad and celebratory.”

The single “Jan” is out now digitally via Plastic World. Buy it here.

Sydney/Melbourne trio Retiree, consisting Matt Crowley, Tori Holleman and Marco Vella, have spent enough time together over the last few years that their broad and varied influences blend into a unique emulsion of strongly rhythmic and emotional music. With two superb EPs already under their belt, namely 2013’s debut self-titled 12” on Plastic World and 2015’s “This Place” on Rhythm Section, Retiree make a welcome return with their new single “Continental”. It’s yet another fine example of Retiree’s ever-evolving sound.

In their own words:”‘Continental’ features a field recording of water lapping in a Venice canal. It’s not about Brexit. It is about selfie sticks, love, photo albums and tourism. The song was written in a Venice hotel room, recorded in Berlin and Sydney, and mixed and mastered in Melbourne.”

The single “Continental” is out now through Plastic World. Buy it here.

What happens when two of our favorite new Australian bands get together? The answer lies in this deliciously funky remix of Melbourne’s synth-pop duo GL superb slow jam “What Happened To Us? (already posted here) by fellow Aussie band and labelmates Retiree, who impressed us earlier this year with their self-titled debut EP. On their remix of “What Happened To Us?, Retiree add plenty of disco-funk vibes, even their own vocals, to deliver something special with a decidedly tropical feel to it. What a ride! Today, we’re pretty excited to bring you the exclusive premiere of this remix. Blast it above, exclusively on La.Ga.Sta.

The original track appears on GL’s self-titled debut EP, out now via Sydney label Plastic World. The EP really marks the duo of Graeme Pogson and Ella Thompson, lovers of all things ’80s, boogie and cosmic-funk, as one to watch.
