Jayson Green & The Jerk: “Too Much Beauty”

Brooklyn’s Jayson Green & The Jerk, a project from Orchid frontman Jayson Green, just dropped a great new single called “Too Much Beauty” as part of Adult Swim’s singles program. “Too Much Beauty” picks up where Jayson’s solo 2017 “Interiors” EP and subsequent touring with LCD Soundsystem left off, spinning out into a full band arrangement augmented by layers of synth, guitar, both programmed and live drumming, and backing vocals from Nancy Whang (LCD Soundsystem/The Juan Maclean) and Monika Heidemann (The Juan Maclean/The Phenomenal Handclap Band).

The result is a pulsing seven-minute motorik marathon, slowly and steadily sprinting toward a cathartic climax. “Too Much Beauty” is the first taste of a forthcoming full length album from the project, recorded by Midnight Magic’s W. Andrew Raposo and David Mason, aka Listening Center, and mixed by Holy Ghost!’s Nick Millhiser.

DFA stalwart The Juan Maclean makes a welcome return with his infectious new single “What Do You Feel Free About?”, which follows last year’s “The Brighter The Light”, a deep, piano-based club track. Featuring vocals from regular collaborator Nancy Whang, “What Do You Feel Free About?” is an electro-disco club track anchored by a relentlessly catchy, bouncing bass line. Rave whistles, cowbell breakdowns and handclaps further ensure the track’s place as a key song for the summertime. It comes backed with a fine remix by Man Power, who adds a touch more drama to the track. The Juan Maclean are currently at work on their fourth album.

“What Do You Feel Free About?” is out now on DFA Records. Get it here.

Back in June, we featured the eight-plus-minute space-disco jam “A Place Called Space”, the first taste from The Juan MacLean’s upcoming third full-length album “In A Dream”, which will arrive on September 16th via DFA. Today, we’re treated to a stream of the record’s new single “A Simple Design”, which once again features LCD Soundsystem’s Nancy Whang on vocals. The tune is yet another solid synth disco groover. “This is a song about being stuck, paralyzed and unable to move forward, the sort of self-imposed distress that causes you to take five years to make a new album,” says Juan.
