After dropping his first solo EP “There In Spirit” b/w “Rain II” last year, Michael David, well known for his work as one half of LA duo Classixx, is back with his lush new EP, “Melona”. Originally released on vinyl-only format by the UK label Is It Balearic?, “Melona” is now seeing a full digital release via Cascine.

The “Melona” EP includes three original tracks plus a remix of the title track by Manchester selector Chris Massey. The record’s title track sees Michael David delivering a blissed out summer jam, replete with 80’s guitar chords, shimmering modular riffs and buoyant, propulsive rhythms. This one conjures sun-drenched images of driving down a coastal highway with the windows down.

Over the last decade and a half, Michael David, popularly known for his work as one half of LA duo Classixx, has made many kinds of records, but always with other people. In 2015, he made something of his own for the first time ― a bleak, post-apocalyptic single released under the name Studio Paradiso. Now, Michael David steps out on his own with his first first solo release, entitled “There In Spirit / Rain II”, on Cascine.

Recorded late at night on a Tascam multitrack tape recorder, the record finds Michael David bending and melding organic instrumentation into something layered and uncanny: guitars chop and glimmer, beats cascade and push forward, but always with a sense of gentle resignation. This is the sound of a mind searching through time, exhuming memories and emotions ― good and bad ―to try and know, recapture, reclaim, and most importantly, feel. Our first taste comes in the form of “Rain II”, a finely-crafted tune. Give it a spin above, and drive slow.

The “There In Spirit / Rain II” 12” drops on November 22. Pre-order it here.

Los Angeles producer Michael David, one half of our beloved Classixx, is now flying solo under his new moniker Studio Paradiso. His debut release, a two-track 12” called “Ohana”, will drop next month on the newly formed label Distant Works, which LA’s producer/DJ Daniel.T. (of Cosmic Kids fame) co-runs alongside friend and frequent collaborator Cooper Saver. The EPs title track, a finely crafted smooth jam, finds him in such fine form. What a great start for the label.

In Studio Paradiso’s own words: “These are two instrumental songs that I’ve been meaning to finish for a little while. ‘Ohana’ is based on a lot of songs that I grew up listening to on 94.7 The Wave, LA’s smooth jazz station. ‘Samurai Dreams’ was a soft-porn that David Cronenberg directed as an insert for Videodrome. I thought it would be fun to score it, and so the song came together as an exercise.

Studio Paradiso’s “Ohana” 12” will drop on August 24th on Distant Works. Pre-order it here.
