Metro Area’s Morgan Geist, one of the most highly respected producers, is someone we’ve been following for a long time. The veteran NYC producer and Environ label boss, who is also known for his vocal house project Storm Queen, recently dropped the sublime Latin freestyle-inspired “Calling Card”/”Mezzanine” EP, featuring Canadian R&B singer Jessy Lanza, under his The Galleria alias.

Now, Morgan Geist is back with his new “Megaprojects One” EP after a seven year hiatus from recording under his own name. The four-track EP, his first Morgan Geist record since 2008’s “Double Night Time” LP, marks a welcome return to his love for Detroit techno, Chicago tracks and generally exceptional dancefloor music. It’s a “collection of low-tech tracks made with cheap little drum machines and rejected old synths,” says Geist. He composed and mixed the tracks with the intention to make them sound more ‘mega’ than they actually are. Get your fill of the EPs opening track “Darkstar” above. It’s a great one.

“Megaprojects One”, the first in a new series of EPs, is out now via Environ. Buy it here.

Metro Area’s Morgan Geist is back with a new project called The Galleria, featuring Canadian R&B singer Jessy Lanza, whose debut album “Pull My Hair Back” on Hyperdub was one of our favorite records of 2013. The debut release, “Calling Card/Mezzanine”, is said to “ripples with echoes of the indigenous music of long-dead suburban New Jersey shopping malls and NYC radio stations: bombastic freestyle, club dubs, razor-edits and bubblegum-pop R&B.” It features two original tracks with Jessy Lanza on vocal duties, each backed by a dancefloor-friendly ’80s-style dub version. Colour us excited!

The Galleria’s “Calling Card/Mezzanine” EP is out now digitally via Morgan Geist’s Environ Records imprint. Get it here.

Just a few days ago, Andy Butler’s New York disco-house collective Hercules & Love Affair dropped their third album “The Feast of the Broken Heart” (available to stream in full here), and it was definitely worth the wait. Now, Hercules & Love Affair’s recent single “I Try To Talk To You”, a gorgeous, piano-led house tune featuring vocals from American singer-songwriter John Grant, gets the remix treatment it deserves at the hands of Metro Area’s Morgan Geist. Of course, we’d expect nothing less from this iconic producer.

In Andy Butler’s own words: “I needed a producer who could confidently handle both the gravity of the song, a big vocal and still bring the boogie. The mix has the persistent feel of a factory while still championing the elegance John’s vocals and piano brought to the collaboration.” This remix will appear on “I Try to Talk to You” Remixes EP, which will drop on June 9th via Moshi Moshi. Just in case you missed it, check out the David Wilson-directed video for “I Try To Talk To You” here.
