Canvo: “Planta”

Canvo debuts on World Of Paint with a mini-album inspired by the Barcelona Montjuic sites.

Lima-born, Barcelona-based producer Canvo returns with a new mini-album called “Montjuic”.

Canvo was born in 1987 in Lima, Peru to very musical surroundings. He developed his style of vaporwave songwriting in Lima and also Barcelona, where he moved later in life. Inspired by the Barcelona Montjuic sites, built for the 1992 Olympic games, he wrote a mini-album named after this area in 2020. Entitled “Montjuic”, the five-track record marks his debut release for World Of Paint, a label created by Kai Hugo, known as Palmbomen II, and Kostijn Egberts.

At Calafell Beach, where he lived at the beginning of 2020, Canvo composed the songs of “Montjuic”, listening to the demos in a ghost town (like every beach in winter), it reminded him of Lima in the sixties. With “Montjuic”, the talented producer has created a collection of perfectly crafted tracks that will make you travel to places that you can’t explain, but they seem familiar.

Speaking about his new record, Canvo says: “A few years ago, when I lived in downtown Lima, I started a little obsession for ‘obsolete’ technology, so I decided to change my smartphone for an old Chinese open cellphone. When you open the device this little makes a sound, and when you close it makes another. I was almost in love with those brilliant sounds and decided to record it. When I was reviewing old information on my computer, I returned to that sound, and it was perfect to finish a new jack swing track that I had been composing for the mini album Montjuic. Inspired by the electronic drums of this groovy rhythm I decided to paint an abstract and unfinished landscape of fast construction.”

Today we are delighted to premiere one of our favourite cuts from the record, the blissful “Planta”, a beauty of a tune. As he says: “The name of the song ‘Planta’ comes from the concept by which I bought that old phone to be more connected to reality, outside the screens (although now we are in one). I tried to imitate more what we belong to, nature, rather than this trial error and copy language that makes this universe a perfect system. We are all a plant, which doesn’t need to be digitized. The classic house piano of the Korg M1 forced me to play legato chords in sevenths since the rhythm, of a quite 90s spirit reminded me of Bobby Brown songs. For harmony, I used basic progressions, almost as basic as the number of layers or song structure. While composing I also liked thinking that the person who listens to it, improvises some voices in it. Since when I tried to sing, there were so many ideas, that I decided that the song was instrumental.”
